The introduction of deer forests was not popular with the majority of crofters. The author examines why this was so, and how forests served to marginalise and impoverish local people. He also discusses the ways in which forests may have brought money into the community, while still being a major factor in the economic under-development of the Highlands in the twentieth century. There has been much research on sheep farming in relation to the Highland Clearances, but far less investigation of the subsequent decline of hill sheep farming and the development of deer forests. Willie Orr’s book fills that gap.
One of the advantages of new technology is that it enables hard-to-find books to be made available again. We are pleased to present the first fruits of exploring John Donald’s classic backlist of academic titles. Not only do we hope to add more titles to the list but look forward to bringing in other titles suitable for this system as time goes on.
